Polypropylene yarn: A lightweight and durable basic textile raw material

Polypropylene yarn is a yarn product made from polypropylene through processes such as spinning, stretching, twisting or deformation. As a basic variety in the synthetic fiber yarn family, polypropylene yarn has formed a clear and stable application positioning in the fields of clothing, home textiles and industrial textiles due to its lightweight, water-repellent, wear-resistant and chemical stability properties.

The most obvious feature of polypropylene yarn is its low density and light weight. Among common synthetic fibers, polypropylene has a relatively low density, and the unit length weight of the yarn is lighter under the same specifications. The fabric or filling made from it has less overall weight on the same coverage area. This characteristic is of practical significance in outdoor equipment, sports clothing and applications that require controlling the weight of the finished product.

In terms of functional performance, Polypropylene yarn has good water-repellent and moisture-wicking capabilities. It hardly absorbs water itself, but the fine channels on the fiber surface and inside the yarn can quickly transport sweat or moisture to the outer layer of the fabric and release it. This capillary effect helps keep the skin surface dry when worn close to the body, making it suitable for making sports bras, summer clothing and various functional fabrics. At the same time, the low water absorption also means that the polypropylene fabric is less likely to increase in weight due to water absorption in a humid environment, and dries faster after washing, making it convenient for daily use and maintenance.

The wear resistance and chemical stability of polypropylene yarn are also worthy of attention. It can withstand repeated friction during weaving and use, does not shed fibers or get damaged, and has good tolerance to acids, alkalis and common organic solvents. It performs stably in scenarios where it comes into contact with chemical media such as filter materials and industrial fabrics. Additionally, polypropylene yarn has good insulation properties, with a low thermal conductivity, and fibers can be made into hollow or irregular cross-sections to contain more stationary air, providing certain insulation effect when used as thermal underwear and cold protection fillers.

In terms of processing and application, polypropylene yarn can be spun alone or blended with cotton, wool and other synthetic fibers or interwoven to balance the performance and feel of the fabric. Its product forms include FDY, DTY, POY and other specifications, suitable for different production routes such as knitting, weaving and non-woven. The terminal applications cover sports clothing, underwear, socks, luggage fabrics, decorative fabrics, filter fabrics, geotextiles and agricultural fabrics, etc.

It should be noted that the long-term tolerance of polypropylene yarn to ultraviolet rays is relatively limited. For outdoor high-exposure applications, it is recommended to use modified UV-resistant specifications. At the same time, the dyeing performance of polypropylene is limited, and colors are usually obtained through liquid dyeing at the spinning stage. Color customization needs to be completed at the spinning stage.
